Well said Don. Wear your gear or pay the price. It may be a minor scuff or it may be days and days and days of debridement (look it up if you don't know) but either way, gear will make it better.
I've been on the road on a bike for exactly 20 years and biking for 28 and racing for 4-5. I've seen people die before my eyes because they were in over their head and I've seen folks live that wished they were dead because of road rash. Next time you want to wear shorts, a kilt, a tanktop, flipflops...whatever on your bike. Go out onto the side of the road in front of your house, kneel down, then run your elbow back and fourth across the pavement two times. Then think about what it would feel like on your legs and arms at 60 mph, let alone your face if you don't wear proper protection......
Bones heal.............skin doesn't grow back.

Here is something that was posted on a motorcycle forum that I belong to. I haven't viewed the info on the link yet. I thought it applied to our conversation here.
"In studies of 'survivability' of various garment materials to a 50 MPH ride on asphalt, for example, denim lasted no more than FOUR FEET before wearing through. Kevlar, on the other hand, lasted EIGHTEEN FEET. But standard motorcycle quality leather (about three times heavier than fashion jacket material) lasted EIGHTY-SIX FEET. That's more than 20 times as effective as your jeans in protecting your hide.
(The tests were reported in the September 1988 issue of Cycle magazine.)
I pulled that from the Master Strategies Group website- http://www.msgroup.org/DISCUSS.asp "

If Vanson made one, I'd wear it. God knows they've gotten enough of my money over the last few decades. You think kilts are expensive....
