The House of Edgar line has about ten years on the Marton Mills line, so right now they are the more widely used and accepted.
In fact I recently had to field a question from a confused person who bought a kilt from a vendor on line thinking it was going to be the House of Edgar County Clare tartan and what they got was the Marton Mills County Clare "crest" tartan which he had never even heard of before.

HOE registered theirs with the Scottish Tartans Authority in 1995. They just picked colors and designed tartans that they liked.
The County Crest tartans were created in 2005 and are NOT registered with the STA, although they are copyrighted in the UK. They took the colors from each of the county's crests and created tartans based on those colors.
NEITHER are officially recognized, but due to the fact that the HOE ones have been around since 1995, they're more recognized by the "general public".

They took the colors from each of the county's crests and created tartans based on those colors.
Just a point of clarificiation here, but the colours were taken from the arms of the individual counties, not the "crest". I know that the company is responsible for this error, but I thought I should point this out.
The "crest" is the device above the helm on a coat-of-arms.
Sorry to be nitpicky...and no offence meant towards Rocky!

Personally I prefer the Crest series especially County Antrim for its bold colors compared with the HOE version. RockyR has my order in now for delivery in about 8 weeks so I will post photos when it gets here.

Since Marton Mills tartans were based off of heraldic colors, they should be bolder and brighter, as those are the standard colors usually seen in heraldy.
House of Edgar's colors are much more muted and earth toned.
I have a preference for the softer colors. Others will have a preference for the bolder tones. To each his own!

I'd have to throw my hat in the HOE ring - I think their county tartans are really beautiful. So beautiful I own two of them... Cavan and Donegal.
