i've noticed that quite a few cap badges have the X symbol, as well as X marks the scot. so what does the X actually represent? inquiring minds want to know.

The white "X" is actually the cross. St. Andrew was crucified on an "X" shaped cross.
The reason it is depicted on the Scottish flag as a white cross on a blue background has to do with a particular legend regarding a particular battle.... I'll let someone else post that story!
