attention movie buffs Frankenstein question inside

there are a couple of threads discussing the Inverness Cape/Coat and or the Greatcoat.

being a monster movie buff in the 1994 "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein"
Robert D'Niro who plays the creature takes the coat left behind by Dr. Victor Frankenstein. from the beginning this coat looks great but once it's throughly disheveled, this coat looks amazing on D'Niro!!
it would seem that this is either a Greatcoat or an Inverness Cape/Coat.
is there a fan of the movie out there that can help me determine just what exactly this garment is?
it is my hope that i may one day find my way into a coat such as this!!

It would appear to be a variation on typical early 1800's military greatcoats, the tall collar sets it off. The design was by James Acheson, who is well known for his period costumes. I'd look to some late 1700-early 1800 pattern books.

In the movie novelization it describes it as a Greatcoat, so pretty good chance that's what it is.

    There's a movie novelization to a movie called "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein" ?

I think they make them for the cheap buggers that don't have cable or satellite.

I understood that the difference between an Inverness cape and a great coat were the sleeves. Inverness capes do not have sleeves and great coats do. I am ready to sit corrected by those more expert (long day at work and I would rather not have to stand to be corrected.)

You might want to check out this site.
