As a nurse, I can't really go kilted at work, either. I don't even think I've seen tartan scrubs....

Anyway, the clerk was trying the Fonz method of making her LASER scanner work by banging it on the desk. I advised her that the infrared LASER receiver was likely getting confused on the bar code due to poor lighting design of having a fluorescent light about 3 feet above the desktop which cycles at 60Hz, most likely the same as the receiver. Therefore, she should hold her postal items vertical or slightly tipped over and try the LASER scanner at a 90 degree angle. It worked of course. Then I said "what would we do without LASERS? " After she responded negatively, I told her that they are proposing on using LASERs to create a sustainable fusion reaction in Europe for power generation. She asked me what was "fusion?" And THAT's where I realized that not everyone knows the difference between fusion and fission.
Not that it's any of my business, but are you, by any chance, a single chap?

Isn't "fusion" that weird jazz where everyone just randomly plays crap that doesn't go together or make an actual tune?

    Congratulations!

And if you want to review some ancient history of my trail to getting kilted at work (at a large international bank), try this thread.
