Regarding the sporran... I've started going kilted daily (except for job), so I need something plain & practical. A fanny pack just doesn't cut it. Also, I'd rather that it weren't prohibitively exspensive. I won't use it for anything formal. Don't have formal events in my life right now.

One thing to consider is taht many of the sporrans out ther are quite stiff and generally can't hold much. Freelander Sporrans and RKilts are a softer pliable leather that really holds a lot of stuff. Another option is SWK's nightstalker sporran. It appears Jerry doesn't have any for sale right now but they are decently priced and very useful, made of ballistic nylon.

I don't own one but from what I have heard they are a very good product. For a bit more you could always go for a Freelander sporran at a later date:

I love my freelander sporran it has become the sporran I wear just about everyday, and it holds more than my other two sporrans put together.

I have the SWK Nightstalker sporran and love it as an every day casual sporran.

Other than the kilt, the sporran is the next most important and functional piece you will want. With that premise, budget does effect the decision but functionality should be in a tie for the most important determining factor.

Have a look at the Thorfinn sporrans that our own Turpin is making as well. Just search for Thorfin and you'll see several pictures of his sporrans with the interchangeable flaps.

I've got a mahogany sporran with a couple of his flaps to give me 3 very different sporrans. He's also providing an internal "pouch" suitable for cell phones / business cards / keys or whatever.

Great quality, service and construction. Drop him a PM and he'll get with you pretty quick.

I'll second (or third) the recommendation for the Buzz Kidder Rob Roy - I like it especially because it's roomy, has a easy open/close magnetic clasp, and I got mine in brown (which to me is a lot more useful for casual wear than black, since almost all my leathers are cordovan or brown - my only black leathers are among my most formal "stuff").

That's of course if you don't like this sporran with the US Army tartan.

BUT having seen (reviews and pictures of) the Thorfinn sporrans, I'd have to say I'd be tempted by one of them, too... as long as it was brown or cordovan (again, my bias towards color).
