    Cantle(r) for dress sporran

    Howdy,

Here's a project from day one.

I've been mulling over the following project. I'm by no means a highlander, but I am an alpinist and a hunter. My logic dictates that my dress sporran represent my pursuits.

I had a nice shed antler (ready to ship from the 'for sale') that gave me this well rounded branch. I sliced it on the band saw, and cut it to this curve. Then I cut a piece of 3/32" copper plate to the same shape. Following that I sliced the entire length of an 18" x 3/16" flexible copper tube and sweated it around the perimeter to add some heft. I added some simple copper plumbing caps to the surface and sanded them to about 1/4" deep. I believe I can use the caps as base mounts for gem cabochons by cementing them inside. Failing that I can buy the gem mounts from the same outfit, heat this back up enough to pop these off, and add theirs.

My hope is to finish the rough work in copper, then add some braided copper wire for a border. When it's finished, I'll pickle it to clean the grunge out, then silver or chrome plate it. I think the antler will go on with screws that hold the leather body panels and bag as well.

The clasp configuration hasn't come to me yet.

    Cheers,

    Kevin.

Very interesting design. I'm looking forward to the finished product.

The copper is very interesting. The multi-color effect you have in this picture could make a very interesting day sprorran.
