Sounds like you are missing quite a few codes because even windows should play AVI.
Try this site... Free codec downloads

missing codecs installed....video...WORKS! well it works in winamp and in windows media player now. Still won't run in real player or vlc. But two out of four...is twice better than what it was an hour ago. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
Thanks for all your help guys. I appreciate it.

Sounds like the guys got you all sorted out before I even read the post. I know nothing about that line of media players. I'm an Ipod fan myself. And, as far as video file type stuff, I'm far from a wiz. But, my first thought was the codecs. Have fun.

Maybe Quicktime will be the answer. I thought VLC was Mac only...Oh well you live and learn

Hey Bradley, no worries....I just figured since you were the "gadget guy" you'd be the one to ask first. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
Turns out the gadget (the archos 420 camcorder) worked wonderfully, it was my computer that was lacking.

I'm almost shocked that VLC didn't play it out of the box... it usually will play anything on a Windows or Mac machine... In fact, it's the only media player I ever install outside of the OS's default. Oh well...
BTW Arlen, AVI (just like .mov and a few other video extensions) is nothing more than a container, it can hold one of literally thousands of different codecs inside of it.
BTW, for those of you who need a Real Player (or Quicktime for that matter) player on a windows machine, and don't like either Real Player or QT's bloat factor... search for Real Alternative and/or Quicktime Alternative. They give you drivers that will let the files play in VLC, Media Player Classic, and a few others... I once actually physically accosted someone for installing Real Player on my machine while I was out of the room... that thing is evil!
