Buying a tweed coat on Ebay

I was having a discussion today with the lovely Mrs. Prester John about tweed coats and the availability in sizes to suit (pun intended) our various kilted gents.

When reading a blog comment today, someone commented that they buy their suits on Ebay and then have them locally tailored, which they found to be far less expensive than buying a $$$$ suit.

That got me thinking that you gents might be able to score tweed jackets for tailoring to suit your specific kilts. But here's my question: How does one find a suit on Ebay?

I know how to find kilts (and what not to search for on Ebay, thank yo very much!) on Ebay, but men's suits seem to be stumping me. Anyone have any experience or suggestions?

I would suggest searching for a tweed sport coat, instead of a suit, also you could always do a search for kilt jacket, just a thought as I have seen them on ebay before.

McMurdo is right; you don't want a suit but a jacket or coat.

So navigate to the proper category in eBay:

    Home > Buy > Clothing, Shoes & Accessories > Men's Clothing

    Then do a search for:

    tweed (jacket,coat) 38

Replace "38" with whatever size you are seeking. Click on the "Save this search" link above the listed items and let eBay e-mail you the results daily.

    Worked for me.

Careful with sizing. A British jacket with the same numerical size will be smaller. (Don't ask me how I know.) Some nice tweed shows up on Ebay from the UK, so be aware.

Good advice. I ran into that, too.

Prester - once you get your search terms set for what you want, save the search and set it to email your results. I bought my Argyll jacket on Ebay. It took almost a year for the right jacket to come up, but it was worth the wait.

I bought my tweed jacket for $10 from Saint Vincent De Paul thrift shop.

The local Goodwill has a WALL of tweed sport coats.

    eBay kilt jackets...

    Hi, folks!

First, my suggestion would be to start at eBay UK...that's www.ebay.co.uk and THEN start searching. I have landed several very nice tweed jackets in the past several years, and all from the UK site. I will agree that the sizing tends to run smaller than what we're accustomed to in the US. So, make sure you ask questions or pay particular attention to the inch sizing given, if that's included in the auction text. My green Argyll jacket is splendid; I have two Harris Tweed ones, one of which I had relined. And I paid far less than new ones, although they would be nice, too.

They don't turn up THAT often, but there are nice ones out there in cyberspace.
