Is this the same brother who gave you the trousers? The same sister-in-law you inadvertantly answered "the question" for? Goodness, one wonders why the switch in attitude....

As Clergy, I would say, that in ths day & age, if they want the whole shebang, give 'em the whole shebang! It's a great time of celebration, so 'Dressing up' is always appropriate if it will add to the joy of the occasion. Am sure the purists will give you 'absolution' for breaking the rules a bit.

The only problem is that I am somewhat of a purist myself, and was leaning towards the tweed Argyle and semi dress sporran with my antler handle sgian dubh, white shirt and a tie. I just wanted to know what others thought given the "finest highland dress" comment.

I would wear the Argyle as well, but I would go with a black or gray rather than your brown tweed. From my background, the brown is too casual/informal for a church service.

My inclination would be the Argyle and tie. I second the advice to ask your brother for clarification on what they are wanting. While the PC may be a bit over dressed, for a special occasion at church I'd not think it out of place. True to the theme of different worship cultures I was always taught to wear your best to church to honor God. I wouldn't wear my PC each time I went to church but would wear an Argyle. For weddings, funerals, or baptisms I'd go with the family's wishes.

I totally agree, the only problem is that I don't have a gray or black Argyle ah well I guess its back to the tartan shop.

I don't know if I agree with that or not. A nice brown "country gent" outfit would be appropriate. I've seen it done before.

This is what i was thinking of, however with a semi dress sporran instead of the daywear, and a dress belt:

Don't be afraid to tell your brother that you think the Argyll is more appropriate. He'll probably agree.
