    I would be in agreement to wear what they ask you to. Now, it seems you want to wear what's "proper" for the occasion, so in that case, explain to them about the levels of formality. If, after that, they still want the whole shebang, then give it to them. It's their occasion.

    People wear PCs to daytime weddings all the time so what's different just because it's a christening? If you feel good in it then wear it. It probably cost plenty so get your money's worth and keep your relatives happy too.
