MTM??
Do you mean the mess kit kilt is not necessarily the regiment's tartan? It could be your own as long as you wear the rest of the kit?
Made To Measure
You should only wear the Regiment's tartan in Mess Kit as its as much a uniform as the Cerimonial or "Combats".
I probably confused things a little as most functions give the choice of wearing Mess Kit or Black Tie. Particularly for reservists, Officers will not normally be expected to have all their different forms of dress from outset. As they progress they will probably start by acquiring Cerimonial Dress items (No 2) then Mess Kit (no 10) as the progress up the ranks and service.
Because of my age there won't be many second hand RRS mess kits available to buy at the end of the Grandfather period so I would have to buy a new one. I'll never get the value out of this so instead I'll buy myself a new kilt and made to measure Prince Charlie and go to these functions in Black Tie rather than Mess Kit.
Although to give you an idea how long these can last, my current Scarlet jacket was estimated to be about 80 years old by my tailor (and that was over 10 years ago.
