LOL.....You are right. I hadn't thought of that in years. After basic training I grew my mustache back. My battallion CSM always teased me about it. He would check it once a week. It couldn't extend past the corners of the mouth or touch the lip. He would always say "If you want the Ol' Sergeant Major to quit pestering you about this you could shave it off".

One of the main reasons for requiring a soldier to be clean shaven has to do with the protective (gas) masks. Too much facial hair will prevent the protective mask from sealing to your face. Poison gases could seep in through the sides of the mask if it isn't sealed properly........makes sense to me.
