Ouch... that hurts!..... at least you were not inside when it happened, so... not all was lost!
Anyway,... that also sounds to me as a good excuse to look for a new one!

Look on the bright side, Robertson - you weren't wearing it when it happened.
I think I've mentioned before that I've seen what happens when poly melts and sticks to skin. T'ain't a purty sicht.
I'm also told (I didn't witness this part) that having a doctor pick bits of melted poly out of one's skin is quite the painful experience.
So... I urge caution around heat sources whilst wearing the kilt - or placing it on a shelf.

Wicker man?
WICKER MAN!!!!
So there's you intending turning up in what has turned out to be a really flamable kilt - seems to me that you might just have had a really narrow escape there - you might have suddenly become the main attraction as there are dangers from flying sparks!!
Seems to me that your kilt nobly made the ultimate sacrifice to save you from an untimely end.

As many of the others, I have observed a moment of silence for the poor kilt.
You should contact Union Kilts and see about having it repaired . . . at least it's a common tartan like Black Watch . . . there's a possibility that they purchased a whole bolt of the fabric. If that's the case, then it's all from the same die lot. The front apron could be replaced, and the section in the pleats perhaps could be patched so as not to be too noticable, or perhaps that pleat cut out and replaced.
All may not be lost!

Just read about your loss, P1M. To quote the Big C, "I feel your pain."
When I get home, tonight, I'll lift a dram of 12-yr old Cragganmore in commemoration.

Don't count that old soldier out. Get the kilt medic and patch him up so he can soldier on.

Most man made fibres can be very dangerous in that they melt rather than burn. Natural fibres are much better. Having said that pm RKIlts and he'll make you a good man-made matrial that is very fire-resistant. Yo can get a lovely Nomex-Kevlar in a saffron...
