Non Leather Sporrans

Does anyone know of a way that I can get my hands on a sporran that does not use leather or fur? I know that stillwater has the night stalker but I'm looking for something a bit more formal. Any help or leads would be great.

There are plenty of fake fur sporrans available. Are you avoiding only fur, or even the appearance of fur?

If it's the latter, I don't think I have ever seen a formal sporran that will suit your needs.

I believe the Celtic Croft has a high end fake fur sporran for sale. I suspect that while the sporran's fur is fake the rest of the sporran is leather. You should send them an email or call them to ask.

Another option would be to consider either making your own or contacting one of our sporran makers on the forum. Freelander Sporrano, A-Hay, and turpin all make sporrans. Perhaps one of them would be interested in the challenge?

If you poke around an outdoor store, or even a college bookstore, you're liable to find a bunch of fanny pack TYPE rigs that can work as a sporran. Usually they're nylon.

Tell you what though, The Stillwater nylon sporran not only fits the bill - you'll become addicted to the convenience of the thing (There's a large rabble pounding at the door of Stillwater to get that puppy done up in leather...)

The other option is AmeriKilts and their cloth "sporrans" that come with their kilts. Or just go with a Freedom Kilt or Utilikilt with pockets and you'll have no need of a sporran.

But "formal" no leather, no fur, is almost an oxymoron.

I've noticed that Stillwater's nylon sporran hasn't actually been in the store in quite some time... I wonder if he's making changes to it?

Oh, and it occurs to me that patent leather isn't actually leather, it's a petrolium based product.

Pleather + Faux fur! I don't think it would be too difficult. And, you should be able to find both materials at Wally World or Hobby Lobby.

I have been limiting the leather I use as well. I have just finished a few "Pleather" sporrans for a friend and myself. I bought heavy, black pleather with a felt type lining. I then used the pattern at the back of "So You're Going to Wear the Kilt" by J. Charles Thompson. I cut it out, glued it together and then sew it up. They don't look too bad. I field-tested mine at an out door party last week and it held up perfectly. "Being a lady and liking lady things" to quote Little Britain, I normally never wear a sporran, and just wanted to try to make one. So I am pretty sure if you talk one of our master craftsmen in to making one, I bet you could have a faux sporran that would work just as well as any.
I don't have a digital camera, but I will try to get pics of the ones I made soon, to post.

Mr. MacDougall - patent leather is a natural leather with a glossy laquered finish. There are synthetic materials that resemble patent leather, Corfam from DuPont is one example.

I had a rectangular "man purse" that I used as a sporran with my great kilt for several years. It was just about perfect. Indeed, I'm still somewhat lamenting it's demise. It was made of pleather and was great for everyday wear.
