Sporran through USA through Customs
I am coming to VEgas from SCotland to get married in a month and will be getting hitched in my Kilt. HOwever, i've heard that they may take my sporran off me at customs in the airport. Is this true and is there anyway i can get round this apart from buying a leather sporran?

I wouldn't attempt to enter the USA with a sealskin sporran. You may very well find yourself without it.
Play it safe with rabbit skin or leather.
Oh, and congratulations on your pending nuptials!

Here is a link to some of the Marine Protection Act:

Not sure about getting a sporran through customs, but I think if it is of a certain age it will be fine. You might want to look into that, you could also look into the alternatives that are used in the US for example USA Kilts has one here:

There was a thread not long ago with some good pictures of one being used at a wedding:

Brilliant, thanks for the replies and i guess i'll stick with my gut feeling and get another leather one which i can use for casual over here. I am also assuming a skean dhu will have no chance!!

I think if you put the Skean Dubh in your Stow away luggage it may make it through, but not in your carry on, the same may be true of the sporran, I might look into that if I were you.

You will not have a problem with a sgian dubh through customs. I have done that a couple of times. The issue is with the knife laws in a couple of the states, but I would think Vegas would be used to it.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Give these sporrans a look. A custom sporran at this price and quality is a screaming deal!

I have travelled to the US with my kilt and accessories. I agree with the others. Leave the seal skin sporran at home and buy a leather one while in the US; it'll make things simpler. As for the sgain dubh, McMurdo is right, it should be fine in your stow away luggage. Mine always was.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
Stillwater Kilts has a really handsome black rabbit fur sporran that I think would look really good with formalwear but whose style would also work with smart daywear. I have the brown version and am very plesaed with it. I saw the black one at a Burn's Night Supper this January. For a little over $40 it's a good deal.
Cheers

One should also watch wearing a seal skin sporran in Canada. Customs will leave you alone but there might be some of us drunks wanting to club it!
