As someone who actually seizes things on behalf of Fish and Wildlife, I say go with McMurdo's first post, except there is no age restriction. Leave the sealskin at home.

How do you tell the difference between seal and say rabbit?

The same way you can look at Glen's and mine kilts, and tell one of us has a dog, and the other a cat. There are differences in the hairs - appearance, texture.

Re: your sgian dubh.....just get a sgian brew instead! Much more useful for the bachelor party as well as the wedding perhaps. Here's a link:

Just put it in your main baggage.
I took my rabbitskin sporran, sgian dubh and dirk through for my fiance's graduation without any problems.

James,
I have to agree with the majority here. Having flown into several North American cities from London, my advice would be to wear an all-leather sporran on a strap, not a chain - you want to reduce the amount of metal you are wearing as much as possible. For security reasons, pack your sgian dubh and kilt pin in your checked-in luggage - don't try to carry either of these items on the plane yourself as they will almost certainly be confiscated.
For sheer comfort during the long flight, I personally opt for a Utilikilt rather than a pleated tartan kilt. Aircraft seats are notoriously cramped and narrow making it almost impossible to get your pleats arranged correctly. With a Utilikilt (other utility kilts ARE available!!) there is far less fabric to sit on and it doesn't matter quite so much if you arrive creased in all the wrong places, which you will after 8 or 9 hours flying time. Such kilts also have capacious pockets, alleviating the need for a sporran.
Oooops! Having written all of that, I realise that you did not say you will be travelling kilted, but I hope you will be!

Congrats!
Think you've some sound advice on negotiating the TSA folks.
When you're in Las Vegas do be sure to make time to stop by Nine Fine Irishmen, the pub in New York-New York for a meal. And, the Tilted Kilt in the Rio - both kilt cool locations. Try to resist buying a leather Tilted Kilt Las Vegas jacket.
I couldn't.

"I'll have a kilt please, a nice hand sewn tartan, 16 ounce Strome. Oh, and a sporran on the side, with a strap please."

Also, don't be surprised when they make you put your sporran through the little xray machine.
