1) I will be getting a Thrifty-Kilt from SWK. I'm still deciding between Black Stewart (my grandmother's side) or the Hunting McLeod (grandfather's side, more distant than Stewart). Any help?
Personally, I would go with the Hunting MacLeod, I've never really liked the look of the Black Stuart. I think the Hunting MacLeod would work better with a black jacket.

I've got a black suitcoat, but will that look okay with a kilt? I'm also planning on just wearing some off-white hose and black loafers. (Remember, I'm on an "egaged college student" budget)
A Prince Charlie is very formal, the equivalent to a tuxedo. How formal is this event? The black suit coat probably won't work; they're too long to be worn with a kilt. There are plenty of options here, from button up shirt and tie to a waistcoat, shirt, and tie to wearing an Argyl jacket.
