Help me get dressed!

Ok...this is kinda' premature, but I'm making my budget for next month, and need some assistance with a few upcoming purchases.

1) I will be getting a Thrifty-Kilt from SWK. I'm still deciding between Black Stewart (my grandmother's side) or the Hunting McLeod (grandfather's side, more distant than Stewart). Any help?

2) Do I have to get a Prince Charlie? My school has a convocation every year for our first chapel service, and it's semi-formal. I figured this would make a great oppurtunity to bring my kiltedness to the public (or at least, to my peers), but I need help dressing up. I've got a black suitcoat, but will that look okay with a kilt? I'm also planning on just wearing some off-white hose and black loafers. (Remember, I'm on an "egaged college student" budget)

3) This is away from fashion, but while I'm playing 20 questions -- How quickly does Stillwater ship? I plan on ordering my kilt (and accessories) sometime in July...will it be here by mid-August, for convocation?

I would go for the Black Stewart, but then again I just got a Black Stewart so I may be biased just a wee bit.

As it is Semi Formal I would stay away from the PC as it is a Formal Jacket. If I were you I would look into an Argyle Jacket instead, they can be dressed up to formal standards or Semi Formal depending on the accessories you pair them up with and are therefore more versatile than a Prince Charlie.
Please stay away from a suit jacket, the cut does not look right with a kilt, suit jackets are too long too loose and they do not have a proper front to accommodate a sporran.

SWK shipping is notoriously fast so I do not think you will have as problem there.

I can only answer #2. No you do not have to get a PC. It just looks nice. A jacket of some kind would be proper for the occation, but it needs to be shorter than a regular men's jacket. It should cut you right at the top of the kilt.

I may hit the Thrift Stores next week (payday is Friday...WOOT) and see what I can find. Maybe a good tweed jacket or something? Would that look decent? I know a lot of it depends on the color of the tartan I choose. I'm leaning towards the Hunting McLeod because of SWK having the matching tie...

Get whichever one you want. I personally like the Black Stewart, but you're the one who has to wear it.

Unless you are going to functions where everyone else is wearing a tuxedo, you don't need a Prince Charlie. However, don't wear a regular suit jacket either. They are too long to wear with a kilt. Check out the threads about kilt jackets here and you should get some ideas. Some of the folks here have even taken a suit jacket and modified it into a kilt jacket.

Everything I have ordered from Stillwater has arrived in 2-3 working days. They are very fast in their shipping.

Okay, here we go.

1) Pick the one you like best. Family ties don't REALLY matter.

2) You don't have to have a PC. There are other options available. Argylle jackets are dressy but a little less formal than a PC. Even a regular tweed jacket will work. DO NOT wear a standard suit coat. They are almost always too long to work properly with a kilt. Also, if you want a PC look, try www.uniformalwarehouse.com. You can buy an eton jacket, add some proper buttons and epaulettes and save a bunch of money.

3) SWK is FANTASTIC for shipping, especially within the US. If you place an order on Monday, chances are good you'll have your stuff by Friday!

To save some money you can rent the jacket from a place like Scotlandyard.com. For about $65 you could rent the jacket and save a couple of hundred dollars. Allowing you to spend more on other items. Like the heavy weight wool kilt from Stillwater. Or use the saved dollars for something importiant like more BEER!

Personally, I would go with the Hunting MacLeod, I've never really liked the look of the Black Stuart. I think the Hunting MacLeod would work better with a black jacket.

A Prince Charlie is very formal, the equivalent to a tuxedo. How formal is this event? The black suit coat probably won't work; they're too long to be worn with a kilt. There are plenty of options here, from button up shirt and tie to a waistcoat, shirt, and tie to wearing an Argyl jacket.
