Boots boots boots
Man, seems like I never get on here anymore.
A friend of mine made me a wonderful X-Kilt out of black denim, and it looks great... but I don't like it with tall socks. I'd prefer some kind of boots. I remember about 3 years ago I met a guy who regularly wore a black UK (which is kinda what my X-Kilt looks like) and he had these lace up boots that went up to about an inch under his knee-cap. They were kinda medieval I guess, but the ones on Kilts-N-Stuff don't look quite like what I remember.
Anywho, if anybody has suggestions for renaissance or medieval boots that would look good with a kilt, please post. I'd like to get them in black. As an aside, has anybody tried those pirate type boots that fold over at the top? I've only ever seen them paired with p*nts, so I have no idea whether that fold would look incredibly stupid or not.
And no, I don't believe that it's ALL a matter of personal preference. Some things don't look good on anybody...

Tall Doc Martens look pretty good with a kilt... but then again, I am a punk, and my opinion is a bit biased...

I always wear my 10 hole capped Docs.
Man, I'd love to get a pair of 14 hole steel-toed oxbloods... some day...

I have a pair of low cut Sodhoppers that I couldn't be more happy with. Paul will customize your boots for you in almost any way you want and they fit like they were made just for you because they are! His prices can't be beaten for this kind of moccasin as well.

This is the only picture I could find on his site that showed tall black boots. He offers several kinds of soles.

I've come to the conclusion that I like what boots express when worn with a kilt. That's when the individual comes out instead of the copier. And it's so easy to make a mistake when copying. It's yours when it comes out your way.
Pics from my daughters wedding. On the left the groom is wearing what looks like clunky motocross boots with spikes, and a black utilikilt, the best man is wearing mid calf boots with knee high socks. Somehow this worked and kept it formal.
Grandson looks cute, doesn't he?

I have a pair of medieval moccasins that I wear every day. No matter what I wear, kilt or anything else. I wear the ankle height ones, I don't personally like the full boot height in this shoe.
I have seen the sodhoppers and really want some but I'm having a hard time justifying the price. He is the cheapest for this type boot I have found but they are still a bit pricey for me. They look great with a kilt! (I was going to recommend them but JRB beat me to it)

Speaking of medieval moccasins, Medieval Moccasins offers a ghillie style knee high moccasin in black that I think looks good with a kilt (I'm not too down with the back scabbard, though). I own a pair of their low top medieval moccasins in brown that I wear with my belted plaid. They have thin modern soles but are otherwise pretty good historical kit.

maybe these would do?
I'm not sure if these match what you had in mind, but for the price, they seem like a fair deal:
