    Belt Buckle Advice

Here I am back at the well of information,

First let me thank everyone who has been so helpful in the past, and for your future assistance.

So, here's my scenario,I cannot quite imagine myself, yet, wearing my kilt in anything but an informal/casual situation. I am a High School teacher, so I have a limited budget for all of my obsessions. Anyway, would I be laughed off the field if I showed up some place where there were other kilt wearers and my kilt belt buckle was of Native American (I have a couple of very nice Hopi and Navajo buckles) design?

    Thanks for your input.

    Cheers,

I don't know the traditions behind the belt buckle, but suspect it would not be an issue. Looking at those available on the Internet, I haven't seen any consistent design.

I don't think you would be laughed at, I think Riverkilt has some hopi designed kilt pins. I do not see it being a problem.

I think that would look really nice, especially for casual wear. I use a local native silver piece for a kilt pin, and I get only positive comments about it.

    Marshal,

When I started wearing kilts I wore a regular belt with a subtle western design on it. Frankly it just didn't look right. It was too thin.

Of more importance than the design on the buckle is the width of the belt and size of the buckle. On a traditional kilt the belt is wide (2 1/2" -3").

As for belts and colors of leather accessories here is a great blog entry from our own Matt Newsome:

X MarkerCavscout makes some excellent leather belts that are appropriate for smart day wear.

    If money is a concern...

A very easy project is to go to your local Home Depot and pick up a plain thick leather work belt for $10, cut it to the right size, and then dye it for about another $10 in materials. For $20 (or a little less) you have a great casual belt.

    Cheers

As well as what Panache suggests if you have a Tandy leather store in your area you can make your own belt from their stock as I have here is a picture of it I also made the sporran strap with a matching brass buckle.

If you're expressing one heritage or fetish, why not express another? Just as long as you're not wearing a feathered head dress with the kilt, I don't see a problem.

I don't see a problem with a Native American buckle. I have my eye on one that is the perfect size for a 2 1/4 inch belt. Only problem is the Price. I could get a tank and a casual kilt for that much.

I don't know... With the right color combinations it might actually look pretty interesting. Especially shirtless.
