I STILL prefer the BP (belted plaid), as THAT is PRECISELY what it is and what it was called "back in the day."
Plaid: lit. "blanket" it is a 12-20 foot by 5 foot blanket.
Belted: what hold it on.
So, "belted plaid"

Thanks folks again for your assistance. I require help in remembering, didn't one of the first historical references to tartan mention the tartan was of this colour?

I have to agree, it's a very muted tartan. I'd say go for it!
