Buying a Jacket,

Hi Folks,

I currently have my Kilt and I decided to buy it stage by stage as I couldn't afford it all at once, so I bought my Kilt (Gillies Modern) and followed by the accesories and even a Gillies modern tie from the Kilt material,

I am now looking to purchase a Jacket but I am so undecided on which jacket to go for, I'd love to go for a Tweed Lovat Blue jacket or Green, preferably the blue but I have a few questions if any experienced Kiltmakers or Kilt wearers could answer,

a)is the tweed argyll jacket acceptable as evening wear to a wedding? I'm going to a mid afternoon wedding in august and would prefer to wear the jacket all day,
b) would my green hose(socks) go with the lovat blue and my tartan, or would you recommend I order a green hose?
c)I recently went to a wedding where I wore a Prince Charlie Jacket but with my tartan tie and I know this doesn't suit to good combo but many people complimented me on the combo,

Secondly, if I were you I would look at the style threads found here:

I would specifically look at the dressy and formal threads, this will give you an idea or two I am sure.
If it were me I would go for a Black Argyle with the silver buttons as this has proven to be the most versatile jacket.

Most will agree with a black argyll being best for evening wear to a wedding. If you're in the market for one jacket that is even more versatile, you might consider a charcoal, tweed, Braemer jacket. Very sharp and is certainly acceptable as evening wear for weddings. But, wouldn't look too "over kill" as day wear for a kilted stroll or something. If I were doing it, I would get that and a matching waist coat. Don the waistcoat for the more dressy occasions, and lose it for day wear. You might talk to Rocky at USA Kilts about this if you're interested in something like that.

I do by the way only have one jacket which is a lovet grey argyll. It's probably not the most appropriate jacket for an evening wedding. But, I have worn it and people loved it.

Thanks very much for the replies and suggestions so far and of the welcome tae the site.

I'm going to all allday affair with a Wedding starting at 2pm in the local town church and then down for a Ceilidh and a band at the reception,

Most scottish weddings I've been to so far have been with most of the males wearing the Prince Charlie Jacket all-day and quite formal wear, I've always fancied wearing the Argyll as it fits in with my Kilt colours,

I was just looking at the Gillies Modern Tartan. I think that, as the wedding is an afternoon affair, the Lovat Blue Tweed jacket would be a very handsome option. To my mind the hose could work in Lovat Green, or Lovat Blue.

If you go with the Green, a smart option for flashes might be matching the Lovat Blue if you can.

I also think that the Gillies Modern tie could also work, however I personally like a solid tie with tartan.

I say...buy the jacket you like best.

You'll look good with a tweed and you can use it more often as a black Argyll jacket.

I agree with the solid tie and it will look great when the hose match the jacket.

From what I saw/heard at the Greenville Games, St. Kilda kilts seems to be a good source. I am thinking of an Argyle/vest combo for myself.

Also, the Scottish Tartan Museum would be the FIRST place I would look, as Matt has plenty of contacts and carries some NICE jackets.

All of our jackets are made in Scotland, so we've done the importing, currency exchange, etcetera for you (though there still will be a wait time!). The delivery time usually is not all that long on the standard jackets, though the custom made ones obviously take longer. One thing you'll note about our custom jackets is that we allow you to choose from lots of different patterns and colors, and allow you also to select a contrasting vest if you prefer.
