Dude! that really stinks!! I know how you feel unfortunately.
I am so accident prone that for a while, I was on a first name basis in the ER. This has got to put a serious crimp in the mailling hobby too!!

My left hand, (since I am right handed) has taken most of the brunt of my accidents when it happends to a hand. My left thumb in particular. First, while recovering from my neck surgery, a week before I was supposed to return to work, I layed it open across the top with hunting knife. I won't go into detail, but I did mostly cut the tendon and needed outpatient surgery and wore a cast on it for 6 weeks. The therapy afterwards was more painful than the accident and surgery to begin with!!!

same thumb, just a little over a year ago,,was cutting some panels on the table saw in the proto shop at work. I didn't check to make sure the safety catch to keep the parts from shooting backwards was working, and had some shoot backwards out of the saw at a million miles an hour!! Luckily, my thumb leaped in and blocked the wood coming out, shielding me and the guy who was walking across at the back of the room. If it were not for my thumb giving it'self up they would have ripped across my abdomen and would have hit the guy in the back of the room. As it was, I ended up with a broken thumb and a serious dent in the wall across the room. Funny, I didn't get any time off work for that except for the trip to the ER for x-rays. Hrmmm. have I mentioned I really hate where I work? LOL

I hope you heal up soon man!! That looks nasty, but I'm sure it will make for good *and I got this scar when.....* stories to impress the chicks with in the future!!

My injury story: When I was a young Sister (approximately seven years ago...I've been a nun for nine years), I spent a year living in a very large convent with sixteen other young Sisters in West Hartford, Connecticut. To make a long story short, I'm a book worm and the novices invited me (and convinced me) to play football on the convent lawn...I ended up having knee surgery as a result!
So, I really do have "scars" as a result of my novitiate year! I should have stuck to my books...BUT...it sure makes a great story for the classroom; the junior high kids especially love having a classroom nun with a football injury!

rygar, do you work at a wood working place? I work/father owns a woodcraft. I know all about the table saw injuries that can happen. actually know a kid who lost 1 inch off each finger last week in a shaper.

Be glad you were around civilization and civilian medical personnel. Whilst on a field problem in Hoehnfels, I got my right middle finger crushed between a heavy duty (2 6ft sections of aluminum, 1/8th in thick) duty tow bar, and the side armor on a Bradley fighting vehicle, I got some gauze, an X-ray, some motrin, and was told "It's not broken, you just bruised the bone." It was swollen for the entire 2 week field problem, and I ended up draining it 2-3 times a day with a safety pin sterilized by a lighter. There's still a lump in that section of my finger.

Sorry to hear of your accident; hope you heal quickly and have no permanent damage to your finger.

Wood working is a dangerous hobby and I speak from years of experience in the shop, though only as a serious hobby/addiction.

You stated:

I would add: always wear eye protection.

Yukko...been there done that. I remember my father made me change clothes before he'd drive me to the hospital to get sewn up...I was wearing grubby cut offs at the time.

Remember to keep your hand high and when it heals you can have the great joy of taking your own stitches out...no clue why...but I love doing that.

And, after the wound heals up keep massaging it so the scar doesn't get stiff...or...better yet...follow your physician's advice instead of mine.

loftguy- I am more of a metalworker than a woodworker. I was finishing up the pistol grip of a home made Nerf style (foam dart) gun.
and I really like your suggestion, I was lucky and wearing a full face shield but I had a grinding wheel explode and walk up and across my face. ruined the shield but not the face.

but I have loads of stories like that. I've been raised with a workshop in my house.
