Re: Lindsay tartan
Thanks folks again for your assistance. Sorry to revisit this topic. I was wondering if these colours are to modern? Didn't one of the first historical references to tartan mention the tartan was of this colour.

Thanks
Cheers

lindsay tartan
From the look at the lindsay tartan pictured, I would say it is in the modern colors. The wine is fairly dark, but very beautiful and attractive. If you like it, get it. Don't even think twice. Your first gut reaction is usually the right one. Best of luck in the tartan of your choosing.

I"ve sewn up some skirts in this tartan and dearly wish I had some connection to the family for an excuse to wear it.
Not that we need a reason to wear a tartan, but I can't own unlimited numbers of tartan kilts, and so I'm limiting myself to those for which I have an affiliation or the serious hots to own.

I agree if you like it wear it. It was my first kilt that I bought as a kit, to sew up and most of it was already pleated.
I was at a Highland Gathering, and this guy walks up to me and says hello, I say hello back, and than he goes nice kilt. (Ok, I wonder what his next comment is) He says is that a Lindsay Tartan, and I said yes it is... he says cool, are you a Lindsay, I say no. He than stated that he is a Lindsay. I asked where is his kilt, he stated that he left it home.. he forgot to pack it. He than goes and performs on stage with a Celtic group.
I see him numerous times, at other gatherings, and he introduces me to his dad who is wearing a Lindsay Tartan. Neat guy!

Here is a picture of my kilt in the ancient Lindsay tartan. It is about 60 years old and 18 or 20 oz cloth.

That is a really nice kilt and tartan!
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

For general coloring,
http://albanach.org/colors.html
Also, we have this concept that coloring in the past was either REALLY bright ("ancient" tones, which are really only "pre-faded") or REALLY muddy (neutrals/naturals). However, there were colorings that were FAR closer to "modern" hues when used. As for the patterns, they also bright/rich and complex tartans (Caledonia is probably the EASIEST to attest from the 18th century and is probably significantly older)
"The Caledonia tartan, worn by any without a clan, was popular in the eighteenth century, but no one is really sure how far back its origins go."

So, I think the tones are fine for a reenacting belted plaid.
