This has been a very interesting thread, I love those Glenfinnan shoes and have bookmarked the site one of these days I'll get a pair, I just need a few more kilts and sporrans first.

I was looking again at the picture Matt Newsome mentioned with the Sgian Dhubh outside the hose and noticed the shoes there. Look a bit like ghillie brogues but without the long laces. It's not too clear but ghillies might be a modern take on this type of shoe.

The buckle shoes look great with formal wear, at about $ 280.00 US a pair, I think they are going to stay on my wish list for quite a while. Hamish, those are a great looking pair of shoes, they look wonderful with that outfit.
Ghillies are not high on my list of favorites, my personal preference for higland wear is well-polished black wing tip brouges. I bought a pair of ghillies a while back, they were so hard, uncomfortable and ill-fitting, I sent them back to the vendor and got my money back.

They're not exactly like the shoes with the rectangular open buckles, but I've always thought the "monk strap" style looked good with a kilt. They have a strap going across the instep, with a smaller buckle on the out side. Sort of an older, traditional style, and you can get them in just about any shoe outlet in many shapes and styles.

Scottish Tartans Museum sells them (Glenfinnan Brogue) for $250.00 a pair... which according to my research, is the best price anywhere.
Others have opted for regular colonial shoes like pictured here in one of Matt's blogs. They are even more reasonably priced at about $90-$100. Not usually including Buckles.

I found cheap Knock Offs for Halloween here.
