I've read through all of the responses, and I don't think you hit any nerves. It is just the way we write. You have, however, received many options and opinions.
In warm weather, I still like the look and feel of wool, but in a 5 yard knife pleat kilt. I was hesitant to order the first one because of some negative comments from a crusty old (fill in the blank). Now I have two and most people cannot tell the difference.
And I am sure you will not look a "right pillock"

I was a bit curious about that myself.

Having gone from making kilts with what I had around in my stash to buying large amounts of quality cloth, I have now got a range of kilts of different lengths.

The 8 yard ones do move differently, but I am not sure that I could wear a heavy wool down here on the South coast. Even in the middle of winter. However, I now plan all my kilts on the exuberant side.

I have found that even a cotton or wool/man made mixture looks better when made from the more excessive lengths, and although a 5 yard kilt does well enough, using 7 to 8 yards takes things to a different level of swish.
