I sort of collect WW1 photos of kilted troops. I've seen several from the German side to know that they had seen the back of kilts. It's a very sad thing, the cost of war.

In one battle, the Scots' charge broke clean through the German lines into a valley. Unfortunately nobody had a plan for that, and they were massacred.

On a happier note, have a look at that photo again. (I have the full size copy of it here.) See the second soldier in the foreground, not the background guy ducking the rifle butt of the guy in front. Okay, the second soldier has a sgian dhu. While this is only a photo of training in the late '30s, it is the only clear picture of a soldier in combat dress wearing a sgian dhu. Cool, isn't it.
