Like with any suit jacket, I'd think that wool would be a better choice for wrinkle protection and breathability. It wouldn't have to be heavy wool, but at least a blend.

I've been toying with the idea of having one custom made at a custom tailor, but I know it will cost a pretty penny. If you decide to go this route, make sure that the tailor does a muslin fitting before doing it in wool. That way you can catch length or style problems in the inexpensive muslin before the tailor does the final cut on the expensive cloth.

I've looked around myself and never found anyone. Personally, I'd love to make and sell something like that. I 'm retired so I* have the time, but, alas, I lack the talent. I'd probably attempt something for myself, but I wouldn't want to offer anything other than the absolute best quality for anyone else. There are several threads on this forum about converting sport coats into kilt jackets, and you can pick up a used sport coat on Ebay for less than $20 sometimes.

A subject near and dear to my heart...

First, let me post this link to what is the closest kilt shop near me:

Note that they say that they offer custom tailoring services...I haven't had a chance to run over there and see what they have. I understand that they keep rather irregular business hours and I once called them looking for kilt hose in a color other than white and the proprietor was, shall we say, less than enthusiastic about kilt hose in a color other than white...a bit crabby? Sorry I asked, good sir.

What I'm really looking for is a very plain jacket and vest that would do for everyday wear. Think the Wallace Jacket and vest from Scottishkilts.net...plain buttons, plain cuffs on the jacket. I think that it would help people accept kilt wearing in everyday business situations if the only difference between my outfit and their outfit is the kilt; if everything else is basic and plain and not bedecked with epaulets and silver buttons. Just my opinion...

Me, I'm happy with the next best thing. I order my kilt jackets through Kathy Lare in Albuquerque, N.M. who has them made to measure for me at Lochcarron in Scotland.

If I'm gonna wear a kilt jacket with a hand sewn kilt I want the quality to match.

Aye Ron, I agree. I was just looking at alternatives to keep from having to deal with the nightmares I have read here in dealing with shipments from overseas using some carriers and the added on taxes, tarrifs, and gratuitous fees that they tend to pile on. I have no problem paying what the Feds are owed but when the carriers start padding their pockets that is another matter. Seems the Royal Mail gets a better grade than the others. Unfortunately there are some overseas that do not offer the RM as a shipping option. I just don't want to wait a few months to hear that I owe the shippers half the value of the items I purchased from across the pond and get myself in a right pickle. I am not one to just flash the plastic a whim, its my backup not my primary.

I bought two argyles from a kilt shop near me one was harris tweed the other was another tweed, they were on consignment. However the shop who made my Isle of Skye has new kilt jackets galore, you never know what you might find, if you have a tartan shop near you pop in and see if they can help you.
