Kidnapped is a work by Robert Louis Stevenson, a work of fiction. The movie isn't a carbon copy of the book (as most movies aren't), but it's pretty good. Stevenson based the story on the famous Appin Murder case, which is depicted in the story and its movie versions, but it's not a documentary.

btw, the Leprechauns in Darby O'Gill and the Little People weren't "real" either, but I won't hold that against Disney as some sort of conspiracy.
