Sporran quandary

I have to agree. Have fun. Wear your own kilt. Your way. The only time I would really be concerned with "the rules" is at an occasion where ceremony is recognized. Wedding, Funeral, State Dinner (thank goodness they forgot to invite me to the last one!) .

My favorite fashion police moment was the first occasion I wore Flashes. I had looked over the forum and found a few variants, touching the shinbone, two fingers from the shinbone, so I put mine on the way I wanted to, two fingers from....

An auxillary F.P. ran up to me at a gas station and was practically breathless pointing out that my flashes should worn squarely centered on the side of my calf. I told him that was a fine idea if one is in the uniform of the brownies. He may still be standing there with that shocked look on his face.

Anywho, that is a sharp looking sporran idea. If you are in the High Desert kilt police activity can be expected to occur infrequently. If you do encounter one, they probably won't have back up......

This is the reason I cannot wait for m freedom kilt. I want to hike in it sans sporran...one pocket, should suffice. Go sporranless!!

Hey Ninja,

Vests are a great alternative to sporrans for hiking. If you do wear a sporran when hiking you'll wanna move it to one side for obvious reasons.

And guessing you've read some of the threads on Body Glide too.

Plus, if you use those big pockets to their proper purpose (beer storage), there isn't enough room for anything else.

I find that if I fill up the pockets of a (standard) UK with all the stuff I habitually carry around (phone, wallet, keys, MP3 player, sandwiches, sunglasses, drink, book, coin holder, pen, kitchen sink), they look like saddlebags, and it's impossible to get anything out of them without digging around awkwardly with both hands. So, when going out for the day in it, I'll take a sporran. If you're going for a night out with other people, then most of that stuff can be left at home (along with the sporran).

I'll also throw a little note in against the pockets == "no sporran" generalisation:

As we all know, sporrans are not just for putting your stuff in, but also have the purpose of preventing exposure when you squat or sit in a manly legs-apart fashion. Utilikilt manages this on its own with the narrow aprons, but the more traditional looking proportions of a Freedom may not (I don't know for sure, I haven't seen one in real life, a Freedom is on my shopping list for when I have a bit more disposable cash)
