    Irish Need Not Apply

Here is the letter that my regional clan chieftain received from the Caledonian Club. Oh well that did not work. The Vote was 48 to 2 against having any Groups stylizing themselves as "Irish"clans from Participating in the Pleasanton Games this Labor Day weekend. They went on to blame the Irish for lowering the attendance at the smaller games as we were making it seem like a celtic faire instead of the Highland Games. They then returned our check . As a clan chieftain I am not particularly caring if we have a table but this stinks on Ice we have particiapted at those games for almost 25 years.

My request is that anyone attending wear an Irish themed tartan at the Games this year to show your support. We are after all brothers are we not?
I thank you in advance. This is not an attempt at causing trouble but a plea for your support as Clan Cian has always supported and been a participant of the Highland Games

Geeze, that does stink. I'm not in the Bay area, and wouldn't be attending the games, anyway, but I'm saddened that anyone would take that view. Are we not all Celts?

That is pretty low. Why would they actively discourage people from the games? Especially their Irish brothers?

There is something seriously wrong with that attitude. At the very least they are saying that they dont need funds. At the worst.....

    Dia Dhuit!

What a bunch of nonsense! And what's wrong with Celtic as opposed to Highland? Sadly, this prejudicial behaviour (ethnicism?) will likely go unnoticed or receive a patronising chuckle at best: "Oh, those scrappy Celts are squabbling again! Oh, how some things never change!"

Wearing an Irish themed tartan or even a solid-coloured kilt would be a good example of support. As would boycotting the whole event! I wonder what they think THAT would do to attendance!

I'll be going to the Games but I also keep in mind that this is the same lot that wouldn't answer an e-mail, was incapable of returning phone calls and could NOT figure out that my proposed X-Marks tent last year wasn't a vendor and therefore should have to pay upwards of $200 for a 10 x 10 spot.

Hey, it's a great Games, but I am seriously unimpressed by the folks that put it on.

PS: I don't se any link to the letter, Michael.

I never heard of one of these organisations turning cheques away. Mind you it's a bit like that here. Any crowd calling themselves "Caledonian" around here are usually right up themselves, it's a bit upper crust don't you know. Like Groucho Marx said I wouldn't want to be in a club that would have me as a member.

I suspect it wasn't the Irish "problem" that lowered attendance last year...
