    Kilted at a LARP!

Our friends in Portland are very into Live Action Role Playing Games (LARP). In a LARP one assumes the role of a fantasy character and acts the part. There is combat with padded "weapons" and various rules for pretending of spells and such. A "Game Master" walks with the group explaining the story, sets and props, and various costumed "Non player characters" for the players to interact with. Sound silly? It is! It is also a great lot of fun. It reminds me much of being a kid again pretending to be Robin Hood, Sinbad,or Zorro.

    I and my friend Mark

Corwin Silverwood of the Darrow Rangers takes aim!

The F-H.C.A.G. as "Kendra, Warrior Babe of the Outlands" (based on a character from some of Christopher Moore's amusing novels) stopping during the game to pick black berries. I do not make any comment about her shield design, save to say that my lovely wife is significantly weirder than I am.

The heroes pretend to cross a chasm on a rope bridge that is falling apart.

I wasn't the only one kilted at the game (though Erik had taken off the other parts of his costume at this point.

Sunday we wandered around downtown Portland and by extremely odd chance wound up... back at the Beer Festival

I caught sight of yet another kilted man:

I received many compliments both days at the festival including one lady who toasted my health at the sight of me with "The First Kilted man of the Day! Excellent!"

Monday it was time to head home. There is another thread going on about Kilts and Airports. Here was my experience:

I need to talk to Rocky about either a Casual USA kilt with a traditional waist or a USA Semi-traditional with a velcro fastener (the buckles were the problem). Oh well, the security people were both polite and a little amused by the whole thing as was I.

A weekend off from our children with my beloved wife filled with Beer, Friends, Fun, and more Beer. It was a lot of fun.

    Cheers

    Jamie

Hey, I resemble that comment, except I'm 100 miles south.

Panache, welcome to the Salmon Nation!

    Dale,

I also do. 'cept that I don't have a pair of birks anymore. I also live about 200 mi to the north of P'land. Usually go to the area at least once a year, sometimes more frequently.

nah....he meant his wife filled with beer! heheheheh

LARP stuff looks like fun. Do you play with a "set" of rules? I've heard of something called NERO which was started on the east coast of the US but is now played all over the world.

    oh...and I think the F-H.C.A.G.'s shield is...uhm...anatomically correct!!

Looks like you all had fun. I didn't notice anything unusual about The F-H.A.C.G.'s shield, obviously just an over-sized targe

Panache, I think someone on the UK groups list spoke to you, he reports regretting that he wasn't wearing his kilt at the time.

    Best regards,

    Jake
