Isn't "an inch above the knee cap" what is being said when we say "the top of the knee. In my case, my knee cap is, like three inches wide. So where do you mean - "an inch above the knee cap"......?

I think "an inch above the knee cap" IS the top of the knee.

I think it comes down to visual proportion on the human body. To my eye - if the kilt is too long it makes the legs look short and stubby and the torso looks too long. To me - this looks weak and frail.

Now, how you choose to wear your kilt is of course your business - just wear it and be happy. Personally I prefer to wear my kilts at the top of my knee.

    Kilt Length

From a historical perspective--- leaving aside modern fashion aberrations (kilt as man's skirt, e.g. Anders Landinger, Jean-Paul Gaultier and others) and casual settings-- kilts have been "properly" worn in length from around mid-thigh to nearly covering the kneecap. Current decorum puts the length span from mid-knee to 3 inches above the knee. Most (myself included) consider top-of-the knee to a inch or two above the knee as "de rigueur".

By "an inch above the knee cap", I meant an inch above the top of the knee cap.
