And good luck with that Barkeep.
One fellow said I was a better man than he because he wasn't about to wear all that wool when it's 100 degrees outside. I did mention that the kilt is ventilated and if you move the pleats you get a nice breeze!
I did get several compliments including one from a woman originally from Scotland who said she missed seeing kilts and said it looked very nice.
I'll need luck with the barkeep, but a man has to have a dream...
A nice car and fat wallet doesn't hurt either

It's the Tennessee Valley Scottish Society, based in Huntsville
http://www.tvss.org/
From what I understand it needs new blood and that's what I'm trying to provide. Except for me and a couple other guys around my age (I'm 40) most of the members are older, around retirement age or above, and while they still enjoy it, they are unable to do alot of the things they used to do, especially regarding the running of the festival. They are trying to find someone to be the chairman so we can get it going for 2008. I'm helping the athletic chairman with planning that part and will also help with vendors and clans.
I'm hoping to stir up some interest and maybe eventually we can start having more small, casual events that will draw other people into the society.
And if you plan on being up this way let me know, we'll have a kilt night.

It wasn't Beowulf that was doing the bashing, it was me. And it was meant to be a gentle bashing because this has come up before and it's not that bad a thing.
Some members here belong to well organized groups.

The key here is set the standard. If you wear a kilt, it may encourage others. If they don't fine, but if anymore do, then others will tend to join in. Remember, a large number of people see a kilt as more formal than informal.

I didn't even check their website until after I'd posted the address. Wow, it's only one page now. They used to have quite a bit more information about the society, some piping bands and pics from previous festivals.
Graywolf,
I agree. I believe that is one of the issues. It seems a lot of the older members do see the kilt as a formal garment. Which is fine. I enjoy wearing it both formally and casually.

I really enjoyed my first Burns Night earlier this year and am greatly looking forward to next years, but I find it amusing that kilts have become such an expected part of the Burns night tradition. After all Robert Burns himself was a lowlander and would never have worn a kilt. Tartan Trews maybe?
So perhaps all these gents were celebrating their lowlander heritage.

You never know, after they've seen you in a kilt maybe some more of them will start to follow suit and come wearing theirs. I had the same at a works Christmas dance here in Edinburgh a few years back. I was the only guy in a kilt can you believe that - here in Edinburgh! Anyway next year loads of the guys turned up in kilts so you never know.
