			feather sporran

Has anyone out there made/seen a feather sporran? Something like a semi-formal rabbit fur one only made with the down chest skin of a bird such as a dove or partridge. I'm curious because I have a picture of one in my head and it looks quite nice with the speckled feathers and claws for tassels but I'm not sure how feasible it is or if it would even look like I think it would.

If you do make it please post a picture. It sounds cool. Are you going to have the bird's head on as well? People might comment on your pecker then.

I've never seen such a beast. I would think that you would need a big bird to do it though.

Check out this website. I'm not sure how durable a feather sporran would be, though...

Those are really nice. I especially like the full mask fox one because it doesn't look at all like roadkill.

I basically want to take a standard, everyday, leather sporran and cover it in feathered bird skin. Another good place to look for a feathered skin would be your local fly fishing shop. I don't know about NH but there are plenty of then in Oregon. I'd use a plain leather sporran as a base and use a leather bonding cement to fix the feathered skin to the front and flap. That is a great idea.

Finally, I can help with d DIY question. Pheasant have beautiful feathers and are the easiest to skin. Either the breast or the back feathers will make a beautiful accent, and unlike doves, will actually be big enough to cover a decent patch. I've accented picture frames for pictures of some of my favorite dogs with pheas feathers. The skins are easy to cure as well, borax or salt should be all you need.
If you don't hunt, or don't know someone who does, there are lots of breeders around who raise birds.
Let me know if you need help.
 David
