This is beginning to remind me of the old phrase "A camel is a horse designed by committee." At this point I'd say let's chuck the lot and find something else to do. Personally, I like the first motto "By Choice not Blood" it had the same direct unapologetic guts as other "real" highland clan mottos. I fear that by the time we avoid everyone's delicate sensibilities (especially mine) we'll end up with something akin to pablum.

There are a lot of good choices here

I'm a first time poster although I've been lurking for some months (my account shows three posts, but those were made by my brother, Turpin, when he logged on at our mother's computer). I like all the suggestions except "by choice not blood."

I also think serious consideration should be given to having the motto in English. Historically, the reason for having a motto in Latin was that Latin was universally understood. That's why the Roman Catholic church had mass in Latin up until about 1970. Latin was the language of treaties and diplomacy until about the 17th century when French became the "lingua franca" of the world. English is now the "lingua franca" whereas something written in Latin tends to obscure the meaning.

I am not yet kilted, but Turpin is slowly wearing me down. I believe there is a kilt (or possibly several) in my future.

(I'm Turpin's weird friend in South Carolina who LOVES box pleat kilts.)

    Back to topic:

Personally, I have no issues with "By Choice, Not Blood" in EITHER English, Latin or Gaelic.
My purpose is to help us get the most appropriate phrase/slogan possible.

If we go a different direction than "By Choice . . ." I's suggest making it kilt related (as that is the rally at X Marks).
Ex: Kilts By Choice/By Choice, Kilted
(slight variants based upon the "Per Electum" theme)

When I first saw "By Choice, not Blood" I thought that is was great. But as I reflect on it, I think that it may appear to show a competitive attitude toward the "traditional" clans. (After all, we are a kind of "New Era" clan.)

I think that "In Kilted Fellowship" expresses what we are -- the express purpose of this forum. Fellowship to me is a "brotherly" friendship. Kind of like fraternity. We are a fraternity of those who love the kilt.

Perhaps time for another poll Jamie I'm thinking that I'm seeing a winner in the midst.

Shouldn't "It's not a skirt" be the battle cry? I'm for "In Kilted Fellowship" too.

    Be well,
