One sure way you can usually tell is to check and see if the warp is the same as the weft (horizonatl and vertical the same). In traditional Scottish tartans, they will be. In a lot of fashion fabrics used in the clothing industry, the patterns will be different, as they are here.
Thanks Matt - I feel pretty proud of myself for noticing the same thing.
Another way to say it is that tartan will look the same when turned ninety degrees. That's without all the right words, but it's the way I think about it.
