What about the length of the Sport Kilt

I've just been hired (at a very very modest fee) as the Piper for Notre Dame Prep, Michigan's home football games. I have been thinking about ordering a sport kilt (don't need to wear my 16 or 18 oz wool kilts) I was told that they wear the same tartan as the Notre Dame University Pipe Band. It appears, from their web site, that it is the All Irish, tartan. At any rate, I thought I'd order a XXL with all the trimmings, fringe etc. to wear just for that event. I have at least 4 more to go. I also hope to get to pipe the graduation in June and perhaps the basketball team in the winter.

The quality looks good and I have heard some good things here, but I am concerned about the length. I am 6"4" and my personal kilts (by Brunette's in Canada) are 24" and the length shown on the order sheet is 22.5" I can wear the kilt a bit lower than I do now (the 24 comes to the knee and I wear it a bit low so that it really comes a bit below the knee. I don't want to look like I am wearing a "mini kilt" after all. (It is wildly attractive on 18 year old girls but plain ugly on any aged guy) However, I don't really want to wear the kilt so low that it reminisant of the plumber guy on Redneck TV. (GitErDone)

I've got a feeling that you might find the Sportkilt a bit short. It'll will be fairly close but you said you want longer. I'm 6' and mine fits pretty good. The overall length is 22" but it is designed to be worn lower at jean height. I'm, umm, slimmer than you, sorry, so I have a bit of room to manouvre. You don't. The other thing I'm seeing is that since the Sportkilt is a generic fit, it doesn't have the tailored features that let you move. Bend over in a fitted kilt and you won't get arrested, in a Sportkilt, you'll clear the park.

Thinking it over, I probably wouldn't use a Sportkilt for a public event like that. There's too many potential disaster: it's too light to stand a heavy wind; bend over, whoops.

See what some of the other people suggest.

You can try this. Order a basic Sportkilt to see the fit, and return it for refund if it's no good, and return for exchange if it works. Or keep it. This suggestion was actually on one of the kilt sellers sites.

The way too short length of Sportkilt is one of the reasons I don't wear them. Also, I wouldn't think that you would find the elasticized pleats in the back suitable for public piping. They just never hang right.

Have you looked at Stillwater's Irish National kilts?

I don't have a Thrifty-Kilt of my own, but I've examined one that I bought for a friend. I DO have an economy Irish National from SWK, and would wear the economy or a thrifty anywhere that I'd wear a SportKilt (and I do wear Sportkilts out, from time to time).

And of course SWKs all come with a 24" length, better for you.

I would suggest that if you are looking to expand your business that you use a fitted traditional kilt with a tartan.

If you are representing yourself or business for future buisness, then you need to look your best. Get a fitted kilt. Consider it an investment in your business.

This is true but doesn't Rocky have a slightly different tartan or at least look, in the Irish National? If I recall TattooBradley has pictures of his and itlooked fantastic.

Try a SWK Acrylic Standard in the Irish National. It's a bit heavier than a SK, almost the same weight as their "Heavy" Weight wool kilts. I have: SWK Heavyweight Black Shadow, Acrylic MacTavish and SK Loch Ness, Black Stewart, Tan and Red Hiker. Best wishes with your choice. For your intended purpose, I'd go with the SWK Irish National.

I will continue with either my personal 16 oz Ross Weathered Hunting or the 16 oz Modern Wilson. Each has enough green to satisfy my tastes. I obviously want to look my best. The Ross is the one that I wore for the picture I attached to the posts. I don't wear that tweed jacket anymore, it's a bit too long, but at the time it was the best I could do. I wear a black Argyle jacket and I have a day wear sporan and a more formal fur sporan.

When I get wealthy and/or more gainfully employed, I will purchase a Prince Charlie with all the trimmings.

Call up Sport Kilt and ask. They've made the length of my kilt to my measurement, for a fee. Just not sure how long they can make them. But they do make them to length if you ask.

Course for the extra fee money you could go to USA Kilts from the git go.
