There are definitely way too many to pick a favorite, but I will say that I like the louder, brighter colored tartans more. I just recently bought a Buchanan and it's colors are great. I'm not as much of a fan for the really dark tartans, but there are a few that I do like.

Well my favourite must be, of course, the Grant tartan. However, for a tartan that I don't have any association with, I really like the MacGregor tartan. It's simple and easily distinguishable from other tartans.

My favourite is the Lochcarron ancient Galbraith (mainly because that's what I wear) but I am also becoming more attached to my Ancient Lindsay which I think looks really good with a tweed jacket for daywear.

Mine too!
The others that I really like are the X Marks the Scot tartan and the Dutch Friendship Tartan. I hope to have kilts in both someday.

Personally really like the Clark, and California State tartans. Now I just need to get a kilt in them.

Well, I really like my Maple Leaf but I'm considering buying the Rob Roy "film" tartan. I also thought the black on black (Granite?) was really cool so I'd have to look up that thread again to find the real name.

I believe the one you are think about is called "Highland Granite". The Wizard of BC was lucky enough to aquire a Barb T. kilt out of that material. It was on my list for a while but yielded to others.

In general - I love "Ancient" tartans first and "Weathered" tartans second. I am also very partial to Isle of Sky (which I own) and Dutch Friendship (Which I don't). I have a slew of "District" and "Irish County" tartans which are wonderful - and My "Ancient" Caledonia seems to be getting a lot of air play these days...
Ah, so many tartans, so little time...

Of the tartans I actually own, I am partial to the Weathered MacKenzie. Of tartans I don't own, I like Isle of Skye.
