Well it's not required but it helps, I have always loved the sound of the pipes, heck I'll even stop the car to go talk to a piper just because.

A pipe band never fails to stir my blood and a lone piper, playing well, needs to be at least 100 yards away to get the notes just so,for my hearing anyway. There is nothing better.

Yep! I've always loved the bagpipes, very stirring; must be genetic. Most of my friends hate 'em!

I love the sound of the pipes playing, especially a lone piper.

I agree with that. I love the sound of pipes but alone they can sometimes be a bit much for my ears. However, the addition of drums changes it entirely and it is my preferred "style" of pipe music. There are a few exceptions to this of course - amazing grace by a lone piper is truly moving.

A few years back I spent 6 months in Bulgaria and was completely astonished to find that one of their traditional instruments was a set of bagpipes. I had always thought of bagpipes as a strictly Scottish instrument until then.

For me - there is something mystical and awe inspiring about the bagpipes. I like to tell the story (supposedly true) from 1967 when the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders retook the town of Crater in Aden by marching in in the early hours of the morning and not a shot was fired. At dawn the Pipes and Drums of the Battalion played on the roof of one of the highest buildings. The Argyll & Sutherland's had no problems from the local population after that. If that is not a measure of the power of the bagpipe, I don't know what else there is.
