Great photos lad - the desolation that still exists today reminds me of the violence of the event itself and takes me back to that day. Even in Idaho we lived in complete and total darkness that day and we lived with inches of volcanic ash covering everything for months on end afterwords. I guess they call the pacific rim the ring of fire for a very good reason!

Just to throw my spanner in the works, I was going to suggest that the mountain in question might just be Baker!

In 2003, I went up Hood (as far as Timberline Lodge) and so am aware of its location in Oregon and, travelling from Portland to Seattle by train, I am sure we were able to see Baker, St. Helens and Rainer. Then, from the top of the Seattle Space Needle, Baker is visible on a clear day.

OK! I admit I was in the area for less than a week, and some of you guys know it like the backs of your hands, but no-one has suggested poor ol' Baker and so I thought I should!

Perhaps its Ben Nevis?

Great and very Interesting pictures . I have seen many a Documentery on Discovery and read lots in the NG I still have the original mag from that time... How time flies 27 years

Phenomenal photos. Has it really been 27 years?! Twice on flights home from Seattle, our plane flew over Mt. St. Helens...the first time was looking down on the snow covered crater and you could tell even from that perspective where the mountain used to be and how terrific the blast must have been. All these years later and your photos capture the power of that event.

Excellent pics, thanks for that. It's hard to beleive it was 27 years ago that it erupted, man am I getting old. I haven't been there since the eruption, are you able to hike up to the crater?

you have to get a permit to hike to the crater. they limit the number these by only selling a handfull the day of the hike. First come first served unless they have changed the procedure. This is to limit the impact on the ecosystem. I have not done it but I have friends who have. It is like hike in sand (lots of ash still), one step up and slide down , repeat till at the top. Not my kind of fun.
