Design a tartan?

You can record the tartan directly with the Scottish Tartans Authority, and Brian Wilton can help you with design specifics if you have any questions.

I'll also add that I can assist you with this, if you like, as well. Since you are workin on your own design, you would not have to pay my design fee. But I can faciliate the recording with the STA for you (you'd pay the same fee, but I'd handle the actual process), and I can also arrange for the production of the cloth.

Just one word of free advice -- you realize that the tartans you have designed, as pictured, are asymmetrical, right? This is fine, just unusual. Most tartans are symmetrical.

This is why I was asking for help The original came out weird and I didn't know what to do except edit it on my computer. How can I work with you on this? Email? PM?

That's a very good question. I don't know if it's going the wrong way or not, I'm using the Interactive Weaver at the House of Tartan. Can someone else comment on this?

Well, Donna and I were thinking about what Matt Newsome said about the design being asymmetrical so we sat down at the interactive weaver and came up with a new version.. but we still can't decide between the blue or green.

Here is what we came up with

Ardchoille Modern (thread count: dark red72, black6, dark blue40, yellow2, dark blue20, black6, dark red4, white4)


Ardchoille Hunting (thread count: dark red72, black6, dark green40, yellow2, dark green20, black6, dark red4, white4)


I did a search and didn't find anything similar. We like these better but I want to know what other folks think.

Go with both Ardchoille modern for the blue and Ardchoille Hunting for the green. Problem solved, glad to be of help . For the record I can no longer decide which I like better.

For the record, these will be family tartans. I will have kilts made in them and Donna will have kilted skirts made in them.

Well, I'm a bit late chiming in, but here I am.
Matt did the majority of the work designing the Sackett tartan. I gave him the family background and which colors we wanted, he provided some examples, we discarded some and asked for alterations to the remaining, Matt provided more examples, we winnowed through those, etc. until the final sett was agreed upon. Then Matt confirmed that it didn't resemble any existing tartans too closely, and took care of the registration process.
I would take Matt up on his offer of assistance. First, he is the tartan scholar in these parts. I know I've seen a pattern similar to your designs (tartan or not, I forget) - Matt will look into that for you, and suggest changes if necessary. Second, of all the tartan design and registration services I have seen, Matt has the best pricing and the most complete service. Third, he can get the initial run of material woven at a very good rate (and you're going to need it woven to register it anyway).
