			Suggestions for Sporran

					Hello all,
I've just finished a semi-dress sporran. I re-used the fur panel from an earlier version, and re-fitted it with a black elk hide bag and flaps. (the tan one with matching belt is my casual cow)

I took great care with the new hardware, adding a braided elk hide belt with a good brass buckle, nickel plated studs on the face, and polished cones for for the tassels. I even lined the inner panels with leather and put a zippered security pocket under the fur to keep valuables in place.

Since I'm more prone towards semi-dress wear for local evening events, I'll use this one the most. But I'm stuck on once point... What can I add, buy, borrow, or barter for that would replace the pot metal rhodium-plated thistle that I'm using now? I've considered something like a clan badge or pin. But they, like this thistle, seem a bit small for such a large background. I would like to fill the space with something about 3" high by 4" wide.

 Any suggestions?

					Kevin,
The Celtic Croft has a line of large pin brooches from St. Justin that are 2 1/2 inches across. They are heavy, sturdy, and the detail is quite nice.

 http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/Celtic_...in_brooch.html

I have the Nevern one I use as a hat badge and the F-H.C.A.G. has the Inverurie horses pin for her shawl.

I think that the Ardagh or the Celtic Cross brooche would look very sharp on the flap.

 Cheers

My opinion? The thistle looks good, I think it should remain. However, those metal studs around the thistle should go.. they make the whole thing look gawdy.

My opinion, nice work. The studding on the thistle one makes it less of a formal thing and more hanging out kilted with my daughter, which I do more than formal anyway.

A little off topic, but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy seeing that not only do people on this forum offer really good constructive criticism, but that people TAKE it just as well.

On the woodworking forum I frequent quite a bit (Lumberjocks.com), you'd be hard pressed to find anyone saying anything about a project that wasn't all smiles and praise. Xmarksthescot is a breath of fresh air in that regards.

My suggestion - find something of a better quality than the thin-metal thistle, and it won't matter if the studs are there or not. If it were me, I'd look for something sterling silver - but then I'm a big fan of SS...

I would also suggest to you that you will KNOW when you find the right piece, so don't just attach the first thing you come across that fits your general dimensions. Hold out until something you find really jumps out at you as being special.

Can't go wrong with your clan badge. But my clan badge has a chick holding a severed head so it always works.

					Well,
I guess it's a moot point now. I'm searching for a whole new theme. One of the locals just talked me out of the sporran this afternoon. It seemed to suit him.

Thanks everyone. More to come, I'm sure.

 Kevin.
