Does anyone recognize this tartan?
I threw out a low ball on this kilt on eBay and won it. Wool, about 7 yards, knife pleated. Ex band kilt. Should be dandy for hiking in cool weather, and cost less than a new SWK thrifty. The orange should ensure that I'm not mistaken for a game animal.
Trouble is...I have no idea what the tartan is. Anyone?

I'm thinking it looks like a McDuck variant, but wait and see what the pros say.

Interesting that the warp and weft don't appear to be the same... it's got narrow horizontal stripes, but not vertical ones.

That makes me think that it isn't a "real" tartan even though it looks great.

If the seller didn't name the tartan...might be a fashion tartan...or plaid...
has a nice weathered look though. Can't go wrong winning it with a low ball bid.

It looks like the MacDuff gone bad! What I mean is it looks like they took half of the usual MacDuff sett and used it for the warp, and used the other hald of the sett for the weft. Interesting, to say the least....
You say this is a former band kilt? I find it odd that a pipe band would use a kilt made from a non-traditional tartan such as this with a different warp and weft.
Aye,

Maybe the band was a rock band, no self respecting pipe band would wear it.

What if they were Welsh? (that wasn't a jab at the welsh... it was pointing out that they have different warp/weft tartans)
I agree... bummble bee tartan.

The guy selling it was unloading dozens of items from his late father's collection. Apparently he collected all kinds of band paraphernalia...kilts, jackets, drums, belts and buckles, just about anything you can imagine. This was the only kilt that wasn't identified by name. It is pleated to the stripe as you would expect in a vintage band kilt, and has a very nicely tapered front apron with a heavy double fringe.
I thought that those odd thin black stripes might indicate that it wasn't a "real" tartan.
Still, it will make a good hiking kilt. And if it has no official name I can call it anything I want! MacTrafficCone is pretty appealing, I must say.
The school colors hypothesis is one I considered. After looking at it for a while I realized that the blue and orange combination was disturbingly familiar.....OMG! I've bought a University of Florida kilt!!
