Stopping off at gas stations in formal regalia I have no problem with. Obviously you're more than likely on the way to an event, and are dressed for the occasion. Though, in my own case, I'm never on the way to an occasion that requires me to consider wearing a kilt. But in one anyway. Those places are usually brightly lit, and the kilt looks even more awesome (have you noticed at night under those lights your car looks like it's in sparkling showroom condition, even if you haven't washed it in ages?)
But in the cold light of day, in a busy shopping mall, where mundane casual is the norm, anything over-white or over-cream I shall now be switching to black, bottle green, or navy, and avoid the look of a tartan lolly on a stick.
I can't do anything about loutish behaviour in town, apart from not to go there kilted when the antisocial chemistry becomes too volatile...usually around pub and club chucking out time.
