You're not going to hear this often, but it
is of the utmost importance.
Don't choose your major, or the college
you attend based on future employment!!!
Choose a college where you will be happy.
Visit several before applying. Sit in on
classes. Eat lunch in the cafeteria. Listen
in on peoples conversations. If you feel
out of place, you will have a hard time
making your education a good one.
Choose a major that you like. You don't
have to choose right away. Take some
classes in several different fields, even
VERY different fields. You may be struck
by inspiration that you never expected.
Your major is an area to concentrate
your studies, in which you can develop
an in-depth understanding of yourself, as
much as an in-depth store of knowledge.
A minor is also good, since it gives you
another, though less concentrated, view
of yourself. Don't plan on having a minor,
they mostly just happen because you find
some topic interesting enough to take a
couple extra classes. (You need the credits
anyway.)
The phrase "doing nothing with your degree"
is totally false. The whole rest of your
life will build upon the foundation of
your education. It doesn't matter what
your major is, or how you are employed
later. Your diploma is a piece of paper
that shows that you can open your mind
and devote your efforts for years to a
project of major importance, and have
done this successfully.
If you can do that, you can be successful
in any field, regardless of your major.
Any employer who doesn't recognize this
deserves the small minded employees
who chose their majors based on dollar$.

Yeah. As far as where I'm going and what I'm majoring in... I applied for UW Whitewater because out of the colleges I visited, I liked it the best. As far as a major, I'm going with Marine Science because it's something I'm truly interested in.
