I have never been to a highland game or celtic event, but I would like to start attending them as I am able. I have only 3 kilts, all solid in color and all the pictures I have seen of the events everyone is wearing tartans, would I be "looked down upon" since I am not wearing a tartan? Or would I be better off just wearing *gasp* jeans?

I don't think you would be looked at askance. There were some Utilikilts and other solids at the Stone Mountain games last weekend. It's not at all unusual to see saffron kilts at Celtic events. Or solid green ones.

It's definately not an issue. There are plenty of people who wear solid colour kilts at games. I haven't seen many solid colour traditional kilts but the modern ones are quite common. If you are a member of a clan, they may tease you about not wearing the clan tartan but that's about it.

Lots of Utilikilt types at the games and fests around here. I wouldn't worry, anybody who gives you any flak is just being a sphincter...I think that most of us here would agree that hard-core kilties are sort of all-encompassing and more focused on the concept of kilted brotherhood than starting picky-picky debates over who's more kilted: the tartan people or the canvas people.

I attend a lot of celtic festivals each year and in this area (PA/MD) there are typically at least as many solid kilts as tartan. Amerikilts owns the solid kilt market in this area followed closely by Utilikilts and then the occasional Victory USA Kilt. I think I once even saw a Freedom kilt around here.

I've only seen someone getting hassled about a modern solid kilt once. Last year at the Potomac Celtic Festival, an older Scottish woman completely snapped in front of the Utilikilts booth. She went into a rant about UKs not being kilts and how they are mocking Scotland and need to be banned and put out of business. I've never seen anything like it. She was so angry I thought she was going to attack the workers and everyone trying on kilts. I was told later that she had to be physically restrained and was taken to the medical tent.

Sounds like she had a drinking problem...she either had too much or hadn't had enough.

I've been to one here in Canada, Fergus in August. I started of in a respectable desert camouflage FK and within 30 minutes was fitted out in a black leather RKilts. Sorta spent the rest of the weekend in leather and got several positive comments. No kilt checks though but if you knew me you'd know that that's typical . Wear what you want and remember that being part of the rabble you will know how to dress properly in a kilt.

Geoffrey Tailor and 21st Century Kilts celebrated their 25th year at Stone Mountain. Howie Nicholsby doesn't wear tartan and no one was giving him any trouble. He practically had to fend off the fans with a stick.
