Just say NO to white hose...unless of course, there is some white in your kilt.
In which case you'd better be a little girl wearing a velvet vest & white blouse bouncing over a pair of swords.
Even then you'd be better off with a matching pair of Argylls.

Higgins hose...
But then I came across this....
J.HIggins sells diced hose for $45...now we're talking
http://www.jhiggins.net/catalog/hose_diced.html
IF you can make red and green or red and white work for you. But they also will custom-make hose in any colors you want on special order for $45. Does anybody have a pair?

OK, so that is almost sort of affordable. It's no more expensive than the hose from the Scottish Tartans Authority. I've seen those and they're very nice, Panache has a few pair.
Anybody have the J Higgins?
I did at one time, as I've mentioned on numerous occasions -- and I would never recommend them to anyone. A friend of mine and I both ordered tartan hose from Higgins, both followed the "care and feeding" instructions to the T, and both of us saw our pairs start to fray and develop holes after 4-5 timers of wearing them to formal functions.
Trust me -- go with the Tartan Thistle in Washington State. You can get 100% wool hose in tartan or diced for about double what you'd pay from Higgins -- but they're worth ever penny. I've had mine for almost three years now, and no problems yet.
Remember my Scottish grandmother's defintion of frugal -- you buy the best item you can so you don't have to keep replacing it!

My thoughts exactly. I'd love to have some argyle hose, but I have a hard time spending 20 bucks on a pair of damn socks, little loan three hundred. For my upcoming wedding I may spend the $40 or what ever on a nice pair of hose, but I dont think I could live with myself for dropping $300. So white hose it is.

The Tartan Thistle's website: http://www.tartanthistle.com
They also have the piper's kilt hose, which looks a bit better than the lower end stuff, IMO...

For those who complain about $300 dress hose: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tartan-KILT-SO...QQcmdZViewItem
Hawick kilt hose, red and green with white overstripe, now at GBP 4.99.
One of the merchants at Stone Mountain games last weekend had quite a few of these wool dress hose made by Hawick Sock Co. There were none in colors that go with my kilts, but they look sturdy, thick and the colors were nice. They were selling for US $ 50.

I like cream but I really like Black, especially witha kilt with some red in it, if you check out pipers socks they tend to be elabouratly knitted socks and quite different than normal kilt hose, when Im in Edinburgh I normally get a couple of pairs of "ex hire" cream socks from the bargain bucket outside Geoffreys at £2.00 a pair. at the end of the day use a mirror and take it from there.
