    alternatives to Kilt Pins

ok there's a lot of sites/ads out there for "kilt pins", whilst surfing the other day i saw something that caught my eye, although it was a woman in a skirt, it was on a kilt site. Any way she had a series of what looked like military medals holding down the flap.

so: what about using a military medal as your kilt pin? if you have any awarded that is , currently i'm using the Gandalf brooch i found at one of the halloween shops, just turned it sideways. thoughts?

Yeah, I don't know about actual military medals. Those have a very specific expectations.

Now, I know that US medals are also available as hatpins. I could see using a few of them in place of a kilt pin.

Wearing Military Medals as a kilt pin would NOT be appropriate. Please don't do it.

I wouldn’t wear medals or rank insignia as kilt pins or anywhere else.
I have no service experience, so no rank or medals earned.

If I were honoring someone like a family member or a friend on service overseas I might wear something on my cap or day sporran, but not regulation sized.

    Examples:
    - I am a retired civil service official of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania so I do wear devices with the State Seal or Arms.
    - My father was in the USN and USAAF* in WWII. I’ve worn a USAAF or 8th AF lapel pin and reproduction mini Bombardier Wings as cap decorations. (*An interesting story -- after washing out of USN flight school he transferred to the USAAF.)
    - My grandfather was a US Marine in WWI**, so I might wear a mini Globe & Anchor. (**Another good story as he was a German immigrant to the US.)
    - I also wear a flag or crossed flags pins occasionally.

IMO the kilt pin position is the least formal of the kilt outfit jewelry positions and so can be the most whimsical.

    Examples:
    - I acquired a small aquarium decoration fixture (!) of an Easter Island monolith. I did some cutting and sanding and finishing with silver “Rub ‘n Buff” and added a pin back. Now I call it “The Silver Order of Tiki Bar”. Fun to wear on the Hawaiian tartan.
    - My Family Crest features a mermaid. Lots of opportunities for interesting kilt pins there.

Like many have said before m in this thread . Only wear anything military if you have earned them yourself. I would never think of wearing my fathers medals as a kilt pin or other decoration.
That said there are many alternatives out there have a look at Robins site for some ideas

All: roj, was just a thought to explore.
Dave: the hat pins are about 1/2 inch in height and absolutely no weight to them!
I doubt they'd be useful at all.
    Freelander, yup all earned.
    thanx guys!

Yeah, each one by itself would probably be too small. If one were to use them, it would work better to use a few of them together.

As far as weight though, while the kilt pin may have originally had a useful purpose, any more they are mainly decorative.
